On January 1st, 2001, a new geographical region, the City of Hamilton, was formed through the amalgamation of Hamilton City proper with the surrounding rural area formerly known as the regional municipality of Hamilton–Wentworth. Subsections of this area include Stoney Creek, Ancaster, Flamborough, Dundas and Glanbrook. Hamilton proper is an industrial port city located at the west end of Lake Ontario; and is home to the Royal Botanical Gardens, the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum, Mohawk College & McMaster University with its world-renown medical school. The surrounding area is predominantly agricultural and conservation protected lands which fall under jurisdiction of the Hamliton Conservation Authority, the Niagara Escarpment, and the Ontario Greenbelt plan. Notable attractions include African Lion Safari, Christie Lake & Valens Conservation Parks, Rockton World’s Fair, Flamboro Speedway, Flamboro Downs and the Bruce Trail.
